Shri Ganesh Hegde Dodmane, the founder of these institutions, had a strong desire to bring higher education to the young people of Siddapur taluk, an economically backward rural area.
Behind this constructive work was a freedom fighter's feeling: he had been unable to have a higher education in his own childhood, but the young people of this poor taluk must have the chance to pursue theirs.
His spirited vision and restless zeal created Shikshana Prasarak Samiti, Siddapur, which now runs classes from nursery to degree, and an Ayurveda college with post-graduate courses. The path to this unparalleled dream was not one of roses but of thorns. But it was done!
Today his visionary steps on this land and his tireless work for the good of his community stand proudly, with a happy breath of success, as Shikshana Prasarak Samiti, Siddapur.

A life in brief
The man who brought schools to the forest
A hundred years ago Siddapur taluk was dense forest, with heavy rain, no roads or transport, rampant malaria, and deep poverty and illiteracy. Shri Ganesh Hegde was born into the large Dodmane family, 25 km from Siddapur.
He lost his mother and grew up in his father's care, and studied only up to the fourth class. Self-respecting and independent-minded, he travelled the villages by bicycle as a trader, and resolved that the education he had missed should reach everyone in the taluk.
To that end he founded Shikshana Prasarak Samiti on co-operative principles. He started a high school in Siddapur, then in Itagi, Dodmane and Bilagi, and a girls' high school in Siddapur. He founded M.G.C. College. Because of him, the poor and the backward of the villages could be educated.
Every institution was given its own well-equipped building, reading room and laboratories. He started the Ayurveda college and, moving beyond the co-operative model, built a remarkable educational institution.
Today the taluk has achieved full literacy, and students from backward communities who studied here have gone on to the IAS. There are government colleges now, but Hegde's work for people's education in his time is unforgettable.

ನೂರು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಸಿದ್ದಾಪುರ ತಾಲೂಕು ದಟ್ಟ ಅಡವಿ ಪ್ರದೇಶ, ವಿಪರೀತ ಮಳೆ, ಸಾರಿಗೆ ಸಂಪರ್ಕಗಳಿಲ್ಲ, ಮಲೇರಿಯಾ ರೋಗದ ಹಾವಳಿ, ಬಡತನ ಅನಕ್ಷರತೆಗಳು ಕಾಲು ಮುರಿದು ಬಿದ್ದಿದ್ದವು. ಸಿದ್ದಾಪುರದಿಂದ 25 ಕಿ.ಮೀ ದೂರದ ದೊಡ್ಮನೆ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕುಟುಂಬದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಗಣೇಶ ಹೆಗಡೆ ಜನನ.
ತಾಯಿಯನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ತಂದೆಯ ಆಶ್ರಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದು, ನಾಲ್ಕನೇ ಕ್ಲಾಸ್‌ವರೆಗೆ ಓದು, ಸ್ವಾಭಿಮಾನಿ, ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಮನೋವೃತ್ತಿ, ಕಾರಣ ಸೈಕಲ್ ಮೇಲೆ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳನ್ನು ತಿರುಗಿ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ಹಾಗೆ ಬೆಳೆದ ಗಣೇಶ ಹೆಗಡೆ ತನಗಿಲ್ಲದ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ದೊರೆಯಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಸಂಕಲ್ಪ ತೊಟ್ಟರು.
ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಸಹಕಾರಿ ತತ್ವದಡಿ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಪ್ರಸಾರಕ ಸಮಿತಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆ. ಸಿದ್ದಾಪುರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೈಸ್ಕೂಲ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆ, ನಂತರ ಇಟಗಿ, ದೊಡ್ಮನೆ, ಬಿಳಗಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಸಿದ್ದಾಪುರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಲಕಿಯರ ಹೈಸ್ಕೂಲ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆ. ಎಂ.ಜಿ.ಸಿ ಕಾಲೇಜು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದವರು ಹೆಗಡೆ. ಅದರಿಂದಾಗಿ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಾಡಿನ ಹಿಂದುಳಿದವರು, ಬಡವರು ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವಂತರಾಗಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಯಿತು.
ಎಲ್ಲ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳಿಗೂ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಸುಸಜ್ಜಿತ ಕಟ್ಟಡ, ವಾಚನಾಲಯ, ಪ್ರಯೋಗಾಲಯಗಳಿಂದ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಿತ. ಆಯುರ್ವೇದ ಕಾಲೇಜು ಆರಂಭ, ಸಹಕಾರಿ ತತ್ವದಿಂದ ಹೊರಬಂದು ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯಾಗಿ ಅಪೂರ್ವ ಸಾಧನೆ ಮಾಡಿದವರು ಹೆಗಡೆಯವರು.
ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ತಾಲೂಕು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಸಾಕ್ಷರತೆ ಸಾಧಿಸಿದೆ. ಹಿಂದುಳಿದವರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಿತು ಐ.ಎ.ಎಸ್ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇಂದು ಸರಕಾರಿ ಕಾಲೇಜುಗಳಾಗಿವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಆ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಗಡೆಯವರು ಜನ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ದುಡಿದದ್ದು ಅವಿಸ್ಮರಣೀಯ.
